News Article:
Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has officially launched the “Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme 2025”, announcing the distribution of 10,000 laptops among students across Pakistan in an effort to promote digital learning and technological innovation in higher education.
Speaking at the launch ceremony held at the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the initiative is part of the government’s broader vision to equip youth with digital tools needed to compete in the modern global economy.
“Education and technology are the backbone of a prosperous Pakistan,” the Prime Minister said. “By providing laptops, we are not just giving a device — we are investing in the future of our youth.”

The program, spearheaded by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), aims to support meritorious students from public sector universities and colleges. The laptops will help enhance online education, research, and freelancing opportunities, particularly in remote and underdeveloped regions.
Officials confirmed that the distribution will be based on academic performance and financial need, ensuring that deserving students across all provinces benefit equally.
The initiative continues the PML-N government’s earlier Youth Laptop Scheme, launched during Shehbaz Sharif’s previous tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab. That program distributed over 500,000 laptops, significantly boosting digital literacy and e-learning across campuses.
This year’s scheme introduces upgraded laptops, preloaded with essential software, and includes technical support to ensure long-term usability.

Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja hailed the program as a cornerstone of the government’s “Digital Pakistan” vision. She noted that students equipped with technology can contribute more effectively to the gig economy, startups, and remote work markets globally.
The government plans to expand the initiative in 2026, with the goal of distributing an additional 50,000 laptops nationwide. The program also aligns with Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen ICT infrastructure, encourage innovation, and create a knowledge-based economy.
