Legendary Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, passed away on Monday at the age of 84 after battling a prolonged illness. The veteran comedian and character actor breathed his last at a Mumbai hospital, leaving behind a rich legacy spanning over five decades in Indian cinema.
Final Days and Cause of Death
According to his family and representatives, Asrani had been unwell for several weeks and was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai due to breathing difficulties and fluid buildup in his lungs. Despite receiving intensive medical care, his health continued to deteriorate.
His final rites were performed later in the day at Santacruz Crematorium, in a private ceremony attended by close family and friends.
A Career That Defined Generations
Born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Asrani began his acting journey at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. Over the next five decades, he appeared in over 350 films, working alongside some of Bollywood’s biggest names.
His most iconic role remains that of the comically tyrannical jailer in Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 classic Sholay — a performance that cemented his place as one of the greatest comic actors in Indian cinema.
Asrani also delivered memorable performances in films like “Chupke Chupke,” “Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar,” “Hera Pheri,” “Bhool Bhulaiyaa,” “Amar Akbar Anthony,” and countless others. His effortless humor and distinct voice made him one of Bollywood’s most loved screen personalities.
