UK PM Announces £10 Million to Protect Mosques and Muslim Communities
London, October 23, 2025 – UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a significant £10 million security package aimed at protecting mosques, Islamic schools, and Muslim community centres across the United Kingdom, following a reported surge in anti-Muslim hate crimes.
The initiative, part of the Protective Security for Mosques Scheme, will fund enhanced safety measures such as CCTV systems, alarms, reinforced fencing, and professional security guards at vulnerable religious sites. The move is intended to safeguard Muslim worshippers and ensure that places of faith remain safe and welcoming environments.
Speaking during a visit to Peacehaven Mosque in East Sussex, which was recently targeted in a suspected arson attack, Prime Minister Starmer said that hate crimes against any community “are attacks on Britain’s values of tolerance and unity.” He added that the government “will not tolerate hatred or intimidation directed at any faith group.”
According to official figures, anti-Muslim hate crimes in the UK have risen by nearly 19% in the past year, with Muslims being the target in almost half of all reported religious hate incidents. The new £10 million commitment is in addition to the £29.4 million already allocated for faith-based site security in 2025.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized that the funding aims to “reassure Muslim communities that their safety and freedom to worship are protected.” She added that the government would work closely with local councils and police to ensure swift implementation of the scheme.

The announcement has been widely welcomed by Muslim leaders and civil society groups, who described it as a timely and necessary measure amid growing concerns over hate speech and attacks. Under the plan, eligible mosques, community centres, and Islamic schools can apply for funding through the government’s Protective Security for Mosques Scheme. Applications are expected to open in the coming weeks.
