KARACHI: The rising diabetes rates in Pakistan are leading to an increase in deaths from heart failure. However, early diagnosis of heart disease in diabetic patients could save thousands of lives.
Health experts shared these views during the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Discovering Diabetes Project and Roosh Diagnostics Pakistan. They stated that the NT-proBNP test is the gold standard for diagnosing heart disease in diabetics. This hormone is released by the heart under stress when it has difficulty pumping blood. Elevated levels of NT-proBNP can indicate a predisposition to heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.
Under the MoU, the two organizations will work together to raise awareness of NT-proBNP testing among doctors and diabetic patients. They plan to organize public seminars and conferences and promote information about diabetes and related heart complications through digital media. The public will be educated about the complications associated with these diseases.
Speaking at the event, Syed Jamshed Ahmed, Project Director of Discovering Diabetes and CEO of Pharma, said that the partnership with Roosh Diagnostics Pakistan will help protect diabetes patients from numerous potential complications.
Syed Jamshed Ahmed shared that he launched the Discovering Diabetes Project four years ago under Pharmavo with the goal of identifying undiagnosed diabetes patients in Pakistan and protecting them from the disease's complications.
He explained that Discovering Diabetes is not only raising awareness about the disease among patients but also training doctors for early diagnosis. This initiative aims to prevent life-threatening complications, including limb amputation and blindness, in diabetes patients.
Abdul Qayyum, Country Manager of Roosh Diagnostics Pakistan and Afghanistan, stated that diabetes and heart failure are closely linked and significantly impact the health and economic conditions of patients.
